Nail Fungus can be a very distressing condition especially during the summer months when hiding it becomes more difficult, as many patients will wear open toe shoes. In the early days it is easy to hide the signs of infection as the nail only discolours but the nail plate remains largely intact.

As the years go by the nail plate typically starts to break apart this makes it very difficult to hide, even when the nail is covered with nail polish there is obviously something wrong with the nail.

So how do toe nails become infected with nail fungus ? Nail fungus is everywhere in the environment, communal showers and hotel showers are common sites where infections occur but they are by no means the only place where infection can occur.

Nail Bars are one of the major places where young women are infected with nail fungus. There is generally NO form of medically acceptable sterilisation used in these premises, as such the infection is easily spread from one patient to another.

Treatment of this condition in the past has been very difficult most of the treatment modalities are ineffective or have side effects that far outweigh any possible benefits.

At Brighton Podiatry we are Laser Nail Specialists, we have been using the latest Laser equipment from the USA for over two and a half years now. The results we are getting now days far surpass anything we have done previously over the last 15 years. Well over 80% of the patients we treat with laser have fantastic results.

The laser will destroy the fungal spores that are embedded within the nail matrix, although at the end of the treatment the nails look physically the same, as there is no viable fungal material within the nail the fungus will slowly grow out as the nail naturally grows.

It takes around 3-4 months to start seeing the results and takes 9-12 months for the nail to totally grow the fungus out.

We often find that nails become thickened once infected with nail fungus. After specialst treatment with laser in most cases the thickness will improve as the nail grows out free of nail fungus.

A very mild case that was treated with topical treatments for 4 years with no result. We treated it with Laser and a few months later the laser had removed the fungus that 4 years of topical treatment could not shift.
